Mortágua, Central Portugal.

 

Location

Mortágua is situated in the Beiras region of Central Portugal in the district of Viseu, surrounded by stunning countryside. It has a population of around 10,000.

Many describe this area as the 'Real  Portugal', it is an area of outstanding natural beauty. In the local villages, families still rear their own animals and tend to their grape vines, crops and olive trees following the same traditions as their ancestors have for centuries before them.

 

Facilities

Mortágua has a good selection of shops including three supermarkets, post office, banks, cafes and restaurants along with all of the other amenities you would expect. The town has its own train station and an outdoor swimming pool.

 

Transport/Accessibility

Mortagua train station has links to the Cities of Coimbra, Porto, Lisbon and Madrid amongst many other destinations!

The town is just a 45 minute drive from the University City of Coimbra, to Porto airport it is a 1.5 hour drive, Lisbon approximately 2 hours.

 

Beaches

There are a number of great beaches to choose from along the Silver Coast. Figuieira da Foz is approximately 45 mins away and an hour’s drive away are a variety of other beaches including Mira, Tocha and Costa Nova, Aveiro.

 

River Beaches / Praia Fluvial

The river beaches in this area are incredibly popular but never crowded - a great place to cool off in the hot summer months. Senhora da Ribieira is a 15 minute drive away. With stunning lakeside scenery, this spot boasts several bars and restaurants, pedalos for hire and built in BBQ's for public use. You can camp right on the lakeside with permission from the Camera Municipal in Santa Comba Dao.

There are many others to choose from, Vimieiro has an excellent restaurant and plenty of shade, Sangemil with its thermal spa is a great spot for families.

 

Fortnightly Market

The fortnightly market is an excellent place to socialise with the locals and sample some of the best Piri-Piri chicken you have ever eaten! There is always a selection of plants, live animals and various wares and produce for sale.

 

Events

• February- is Carnaval time when the wild costumes are unleashed - check out the closest Carnaval in Mealhada
• August- is Festa time.. there are countless festa’s in the villages, Mortagua holds a 5 day event each year -not to be missed! Eat, drink and dance....
• September- Mortagua usually hosts its popular rally.
• November- The weekend of Lampantana. Lampantana is the regional dish; traditionally it is either lamb or goat slow cooked in red wine. Simply delicious. Most of the local restaurants participate in this event by serving the regional dish and celebrating this fine tradition.
